Syracuse men’s and women’s track and field competes at the 2024 ACC Outdoor Championships

Syracuse men's and women's track and field competed at the ACC Outdoor Championships this weekend.

Syracuse Track and Field spent the weekend competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships in Atlanta from Thursday May 9 to Saturday the 11..

Thursday Elijah Mallard and Xayvion Perkins ran in the men’s 400 meter hurdles. Mallard finished in 6th with a time of 51.97 seconds, qualifying for the finals. Perkins finished in 9th and missed out on qualifying by .1 seconds. During Saturday’s finals Mallard placed 6th with a time of 51.7 seconds.

In the women’s 400 meter hurdles, senior Shaleah Colaire finished 12th in her heat with a time of 1:00.22. In the men’s 200 meter dash junior Trei Thorogood placed 14th with a time of 21.49 seconds.

Later that day in the men’s 1500 meter, freshman Benne Anderson finished 3rd out of 38 runners with a time of 3:48.18. On Saturday’s finals, Anderson finished in 5th place with a time of 3:42.93. Anderson was 2.5 seconds behind North Carolina’s Ethan Strand.



In the men’s 10,000 meter final, junior Sam Lawler placed sixth, finishing in 29:49.50, 30 seconds behind first place. SU Senior Paul O’Donnell placed 9th (30:02.02 ), senior Silas Derfel finished 15th (30:26.37), sophomore Assaf Harari placed 17th (30:31.86), and junior Ethan Wechsler placed 21th (30:36.53).

In the women’s 10,000 meter final, junior Savannah Roark placed 3rd with a time of 33:58.28.m while Senior Ellie Lawler placed 7th in the same event with a time of 34:41.55, and Siobhan O’keefe placed 13th at 35:43.76.

On Friday in the men’s 110 meter hurdle prelims, senior Jaheem Hayles and junior Naseem Smith qualified placing 3rd and 5th respectively. Sophomore Emanuel Joseph placed 9th, missing out on the finals by .14 seconds. On Saturday’s finals, Hayles finished in 2nd with a time of 13.80 and Smith placed 7th with a time of 14.24.

In the women’s 100 meter hurdles freshman Taleea Buxton and senior Sheleah Colaire both did not qualify with Buxton coming 11th (13.77) while Colaire false started. In the men’s 100 meter dash Trei Thorogood placed 4th with a time of 10.49 and moved onto the finals while junior James Nmah placed 15th with a time of 10.93 seconds.

In the finals, Thorogood placed 3rd finishing in 10.39 seconds as Ismael Kone of Florida State finished first. In the women’s 100 meter dash sophomore Kitana Burgard placed 9th and came up just .02 seconds away from qualifying with a time of 11.60.

In the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase final senior Madison Neuner ran a personal best and placed second with a time of 9:56.63. Junior Bethany Steiner placed 13th with a time of 10:40.54. In the men’s event freshman Julian Frnajieh was the lone Orange in the event. Frnajieh placed 12th out of 21 athletes with a time of 8:58.75, a career best.

On Saturday in the men’s 4×100 relay Syracuse had a school-best time of 40.23 seconds and placed fifth. In the women’s 4×100 relay the Orange placed seventh with a time of 45.83 seconds.

In the men’s 5000 meter final junior Perry Mackinnon was Syracuse’s highest finisher. Mackinnon ran a time of 13:58.63 and placed 14th. Also for the Orange freshman Connor Ackley placed 19th with a time of 14:05.01. In the women’s 5000 meter final junior Olivia Joly had the best time for the Orange (17:20.63) while placing 31st.

A select few Syracuse runners will now compete in Lexington, Kentucky from May 22 to May 25 for the NCAA East Preliminary and possibly Eugene Oregon for the NCAA Championships in June.
