Syracuse falls to Cal, Stanford in UVA Invite

In the UVA Invite, No. 8 Syracuse women’s rowing fell to No. 4 Cal on Saturday while it was swept by No. 1 Stanford on Sunday.

Syracuse, the No. 8 ranked team in this week’s Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, competed in the UVA Invite in Lake Monticello, Virginia, this weekend. The Orange finished behind No. 4 Cal and ahead of No. 17 Oregon State in all but one race on Saturday. On Sunday, they were defeated in every event by No. 1 Stanford.

To start Saturday’s slate of races, the third varsity 8 defeated Oregon State’s 3V8 with a 6:36.2 time, 25 seconds ahead of the Beavers.

Racing against tailwinds and moderately choppy water, the second varsity 4 finished a tight race in third place at 7:18.3, only six seconds behind first place Cal and three seconds after Oregon State.

Coming off of its ACC Crew of the Week honors, the varsity 4 crossed the line second behind Cal in 7:13.7, narrowly beating out Oregon State by 0.1 seconds. The Golden Bears dominated the event, crossing the line 10 seconds before both crews.



The second varsity 8 also came in second, only three seconds after Cal, with a 6:27 time. The Orange finished in front of Oregon State by eight seconds.

In the final race of the day, the varsity 8 finished ahead of Oregon State and behind Cal. It covered the course in 6:19.7, defeating the Beavers by seven seconds but falling short of the Golden Bears by four.

The varsity 8 kicked off Sunday’s matchup with Stanford by coming in second place with a 6:31 time, just four seconds behind the Cardinals. The second varsity 8 then finished 14 seconds behind Stanford in 6:44.9.

Stanford again bested the Orange in the varsity 4. The V4 crossed the line in 7:34.6 in another race dominated by the Cardinals, who were 13 seconds ahead of the Orange.

For the penultimate race of the meet, the second varsity 4, competing against Stanford’s 2V4 and 3V4, captured second place in 7:42.5, beating out the Cardinals’ 3V4 by 16 seconds. Though it again fell to Stanford’s top boat, this time by nine seconds.

The third varsity 8 closed the day with an all-too-familiar second-place finish, six seconds behind Stanford in 7:05.8.
With the win, the Cardinals clinched a clean sweep of the day’s races.

Syracuse will next compete in two weeks at the Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh, North Carolina. A series of ACC opponents, including UNC, Clemson and No. 13 Duke, will also be competing.
