Celebrate Valentine’s Day, meet voice of SpongeBob this week

This week, The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics is hosting its annual Valentine's Day celebration. The event celebrates world poetry and invites students to perform their favorite poem or song.

A Conversation with Alyson Shontell ‘08
Alyson Shontell, Syracuse University alumna and Fortune magazine editor-in-chief, will host a discussion about the importance of inclusivity in the media industry and the evolution of business journalism. Since joining Fortune in 2021 as the first woman and youngest editor-in-chief, Shontell has increased Fortune’s website readership by more than six times. The event is open to the public.

Tom Kenny
Join SU alumnus Tom Kenny, voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, for an informal Q&A. Kenny will discuss his journey in the film, animation and music industries, as well as his experience growing up in Syracuse. The event is open to the public. RSVP here.

Are you a fan of snow globes? There will be a photographer taking pictures and personalizing snow globes in the Schine Student Center. Show up with a friend and you’ll get some frosty memorabilia out of it. RSVP here.

‘Black Women Taught Us’ featuring Professor Jenn Jackson

Join Jenn Jackson, assistant professor of political science, for a discussion exploring the overlooked contributions of Black womens’ freedom movements. The event will engage with lessons on freedom, truth-telling and justice from Black feminist thought. Register here.

Wor(l)ds of Love: Valentine’s Day Poetry Celebration
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics will be hosting its annual Valentine’s Day celebration of love poetry. The works of poets from around the world will be featured. All are invited to read, perform or sing their favorite beautiful poem. The event is open to the public.

When: Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Where: Life Sciences Complex, Milton Atrium

REEL Feminism: Valentine’s Day Edition
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Women’s and Gender Studies professor Jaynelle Nixon is hosting a screening and discussion of the genre-defining cult classic film, “28 Days Later.” Nixon will analyze it in relation to the 2025 African American History Month theme of “African Americans and Labor.” This screening is part of Nixon’s Queer Futures/Monstrous Past: Women in Contemporary SciFi/Horror Films class, but all are welcome.

When: Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
