An individual yelled a racial slur at a Latino male and female while driving on Euclid Avenue on Dec. 4, the Department of Public Safety reported Sunday.
The individual allegedly yelled a racist comment as the male and female were walking near Ostrom Avenue. The two victims reported the verbal harassment, which did not involve a physical confrontation, according to DPS.
This incident is now one of at least 17 racist, anti-Semitic or bias-related incidents reported on or near the Syracuse University campus since Nov. 7. The reported incidents have included racial slurs found in residence halls and shouted at students, a swastikas etched in the snow near Main Campus and an anti-Semitic email sent to an SU professor. This is the first reported incident to target Latino individuals.
DPS and the Syracuse Police Department are investigating the incident, according to DPS. DPS has met with the two victims and has reviewed security camera footage from the area.
A bias-related incident reported Dec. 4 on 401 Euclid Ave. was listed in DPS crime logs as ‘closed’ as of Dec. 6. The Euclid Avenue incident was the only bias-related incident reported that day, according to the crime log. The crime log now labels the reported incident as ‘investigation.’
