A bullet struck a SUNY-ESF dorm over the weekend, an ESF official said in an email to the campus on Saturday night.
Anne Lombard, vice provost and dean for student affairs, said in the email that the Syracuse Police Department believes the bullet was a stray shot from a vehicle on Interstate 81. Centennial Hall, the building that the bullet struck, was not a target, Lombard said.
But SPD spokesperson Sgt. Matthew Malinowski said on Monday that police do not know who fired the bullet.
“It is unknown where the shots originated from. No suspect information at this time,” Malinowski said in a press release.
SPD responded to the incident at 3:49 a.m. on Saturday after a resident said a bullet was fired into his bedroom and struck a wall, Malinowski said.
SPD and ESF’s University Police Department are working together on the investigation. Centennial Hall is located at 142 Oakland St. near I-81.
