SU Counseling Center names new staff therapists, assistant director

The new hires come as part of Invest Syracuse, a $100 million initiative that aims in part to improve the SU student experience.

Syracuse University on Monday announced the names of two new Counseling Center staff therapists it has hired as part of an expansion of mental health services.

Monday’s announcement comes just three days after SU named the center’s new assistant director/training director.

Karin DeLeon and Danielle Jones, the new staff therapists, will provide individual and group therapy, as well as crisis intervention and education outreach programming to students, according to an SU News releaseHeather Cosgrove will serve as the center’s new assistant director/training director, the university announced on Friday.

The university previously announced the creation of the three new Counseling Center positions as part of Invest Syracuse, a $100 million initiative to improve the SU student experience, among other things.

DeLeon currently works at Virginia Commonwealth University as an advanced mental health resident in VCU’s Counseling Services. She has nearly a decade of clinical social work experience. She starts at SU on July 16.



Jones, a graduate of the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, has worked as a therapist at Vera House, an anti-domestic and sexual violence advocacy organization. She has also worked as a counselor at Le Moyne College.  

Cosgrove, the new assistant director/training director, will supervise graduate student trainees and behavioral health interns.

Cosgrove, who holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology, previously worked at Hamilton College as an assistant director and staff psychologist at the school’s counseling center. At Hamilton, she provided individual and group therapy and supervised interns. Cosgrove begins her new position on July 16.

The new assistant director will also oversee graduate students who help with individual counseling, group therapy and outreach and education efforts within Health Services and the Office of Health Promotion, according to the release.
