Student hit by car on Waverly Avenue

Frank Ready, a senior television, radio and film major, was hit by a car at 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday on Waverly Avenue behind the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Ready said he was transported to Crouse Hospital and remained there for a couple of hours. He sustained a mild concussion and no other injuries.

The name of the female student who drove the car could not be obtained by The Daily Orange. She was driving a gold Honda Civic. Syracuse Police Department, which handled the investigation, would not comment on the incident.

Department of Public Safety Chief Tony Callisto confirmed that a motor vehicle accident involving students did occur and that SPD responded to the accident.

Ready said he was leaving Newhouse III and crossing Waverly Avenue, outside of a crosswalk, when the car struck him.

Jessica Engel, a sophomore public relations major, had just crossed Waverly Avenue on her way to the Martin J. Whitman School of Management when the accident occurred. She said she heard a noise and turned around to see a male student rolling on the pavement.

The driver immediately exited the car and ran over to Ready, Engel said. He briefly stood up but then fell to the ground again, she said. Engel was standing right in front of the SU Ambulance building, so she ran inside to get help.

‘Typically I’m pretty good, but I don’t remember if I looked both ways,’ Ready said. ‘I didn’t see the car, and from there, it’s pretty much a blur.’

Ready said he is unsure of who is at fault for the accident and said he does not plan to pursue any legal action against the driver.

‘I’m just glad I’m OK and that everyone is OK,’ he said. ‘People have been hurt much worse.’
