Student robbed, assaulted in Westcott neighborhood

A 25-year-old Syracuse University student was robbed and assaulted Sunday afternoon, said Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse Police Department.

The incident occurred when the female student was walking near Fellows Avenue and Harvard Place at approximately 12:40 p.m. Sunday, Connellan said.

When the man displayed a knife and demanded money, the student handed him $100, The Post-Standard reported Sunday. He then asked to see her breasts, and when she didn’t comply, he proceeded to grope her and then fled down the street. Connellan said SPD estimates the suspect to be 14 to 16 years old.

The student stopped a taxi, and a passenger got out and chased the suspect. At one point, the passenger had the suspect pinned against a fence. SPD hadn’t detained a suspect as of Monday afternoon.

Connellan could not discuss SPD’s next steps in the case, as it is an active investigation. He said SU’s Department of Public Safety was notified of the incident.

Connellan would not release any other information about the student.

He offered his advice to students, if ever caught in a similar situation.

‘Comply,’ Connellan said. ‘It’s not worth getting hurt over a few bucks. Get a good description, and call 911 as soon as possible.’
